What is most essential for an exercise enthusiast?
This question sparked my curiosity when one of my best friends, who is a fitness freak, was admitted in the hospital for renal colic. At first, we all were very concerned about test reports, but we became amazed when everything came out fine and the reason of condition was dehydration. Yes, adequate hydration is the most important ingredient in achieving fitness targets. At least in this case for my friend.
At least 60% of our body is composed of water. In this article we are going to explore the importance of water to our body for several important considerations, how our body reacts when water supply is not enough, what is its reaction in time of exercise, dehydration and stress.
DETOXIFICATION: Water is an excellent detoxifier. Kidneys remove metabolic waste from our body, in the form of urine, with water. When we exercise, metabolism is high. There is more production of toxins. If one does not care about proper hydration these toxins accumulate in our body, which proves to be detrimental to ones health.
MUSCULOSKELETAL: The range of motion of our joints determine our extent of being mobile. Water is important to help supply the fluid that cushions joint cavities. Otherwise, there would be friction between two bone surfaces and it is very painful condition. Many fitness experts recommend that one should drink pure water before a workout, as it would help in giving more endurance to muscles. Water provides essential minerals which our cells need to work efficiently.
BODY TEMPERATURE: Water helps us regulate body temperature in staying cool as it maintains body temperature.
NERVOUS SYSTEM: In our modern era, it is proven by a lot of research work that in a well hydrated state our brain cells work more efficiently. The brain is one of the more water-dense areas of our body. When properly hydrated, we can think and memorize better than when we are dehydrated. We can perform physical activities in more coordinated way. We are more alert. Who can overlook the importance of balance in a physical activity?
HEALTHY HEART: During exercise our body is already in a state of stress, on top of that if one is dehydrated we can imagine the consequences. The heart has to pump harder to move the blood, so it puts more load on heart muscles, which we don't want.
SKIN: If we drink water at a regular interval, it can add a freshness to our skin. It also helps in reducing aging signs.
Now let's take a look at alkaline water. Our normal body pH is 7.4. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline and less than 7.0 is acidic. Alkaline water helps in neutralizing acid in our body. It also helps in better absorption of nutrients. It gives a boost to our body metabolism. The Bottom Line: If we need to understand the importance of proper hydration more, consider the plants in your garden. When you forget to supply water, they quickly wilt. In much the same way, your body needs water for proper functioning. Next time when you feel signs of dehydration, a headache, lethargy, or confusion; please don't make further delay in drinking water. Carry your water bottle with you, quench your thirst.
